Europe hosts the EU-funded European Malaria Graduate School, currently comprising 33 PhD students and created by three existing malaria research networks:

  • BioMalPar is a Network of Excellence that conducts research on the malaria parasite and its interactions with both mammalian hosts and mosquito vectors

  • MalParTraining is a European Early Stage Training Marie Curie Action dealing with the challenge of malaria in the post genomic era

  • AntiMal is a European Integrated Project for the development of new drugs and drug combinations for the treatment of malaria.

Applications are invited for 14 new PhD studentships under a new EU-funded Marie Curie Initial Training Network (ITN) called InterMalTraining. Fellows will undertake collaborative research projects, each supervised by two or more principle investigators. Detailed descriptions of the projects are available. Informal enquiries on specific projects should be directed to the relevant supervisors.

Eligibility

Students should hold the necessary qualifications entitling them to undertake PhD study in their chosen country, and should possess a high standard of written and spoken English. Further information on eligibility can be found at Biomal.

How to apply

Applications are to be submitted online at InterMalTraining and are due before 1st September 2008. Candidates may apply for up to three different projects.

Short-listed candidates will be invited to the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), Heidelberg, on 13-15 October 2008, for interviews with the Admissions Committee. Offers of admission to the PhD programmes will be made one week after the interviews.

Locations for training and study

Successful candidates will be expected to attend at the University Montpellier, France in January 2009 for the two-week introductory PhD course. Subsequent workshops and practical courses in London, Heidelberg and Lisbon will provide additional training opportunities.

Studentships will be funded for a maximum of three years with the possibility of spending part of the studentship at a partner institution.
