(see original article The European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) has approved record funding of over Euro 80 million ($124m)for research into prevention of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in Africa . EDCTP was created in 2003 to develop new clinical interventions and adapt existing treatments to address the needs of sub-Saharan Africa in the field of poverty-related diseases, specifically HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. The Partnership includes 14 participating EU Member States plus Norway and Switzerland as well as sub-Saharan African countries. EDTCP seeks to help EU Member States to integrate and co-ordinate their own national research and development programmes and form partnerships with their African counterparts. The approval of the E80 million record funding is expected to boost cooperation between European and African researchers. The investment consists of a E40 million contribution from the European Commission, to be matched up by EU Member States and third parties. The projects involve 12 European countries and 22 sub-Saharan African countries. Funding has been approved in the following areas:
Additional funding in the areas of HIV treatment, vaccines and microbicides, TB treatment and for Networks of Excellence is expected to be approved in the second half of 2008. Further information Comments |
