As reported on TropIKA.net Brazil has this year experienced what may have been its worst ever outbreak of dengue fever, with over a quarter of a million Brazilians affected.

Gerald Weissmann, the Editor-in-Chief of FASEB Journal (the journal of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology), has now written an editorial commenting on the latest outbreak from a historical perspective. He says that politics have stood in the way of prevention in Rio de Janeiro, the worst afflicted city.

TropIKA.net has also reported that The Butanta Institute, located in Sao Paulo, Brazil, has announced a project in partnership with the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) that it says will lead to the beginning of human trials for a dengue vaccine candidate by next year.
